Soldiers Memorial Military Museum

Soldiers Memorial Military Museum (SMMM) opened on Memorial Day in 1938 as a tribute to local World War I veterans. In the time since, its scope has expanded to include all American military conflicts through the lens of St. Louis. SMMM is managed by the Missouri Historical Society (MHS) while the building and collection continues to be owned by the City of St. Louis. The relationship between MHS and the City of St. Louis began in 2014 and included an extensive renovation, resulting in revitalized galleries, meeting spaces, new programs, and a comprehensive inventory of the collection. The SMMM collection encompasses objects, photographs, and archival documents, with a strong focus on World War I and World War II. Objects include uniforms, weapons, insignia, equipment, and memorabilia, and the archival collection includes personal documents from St. Louis veterans, maps, newspapers, and scrapbooks. Much of the collection can be searched online through the Missouri Historical Society’s Online Collections search: https://mohistory.org/collections.
